Just 2 days after the release of the first Grand Theft Auto 4 trailer, the game has already struck a nerve with local politicians. NYDailyNews are reporting that political leaders are outraged, although other than voicing their concerns, no action seems to be being taken.
City Councilman Peter Vallone had this to say:
"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland,"
While the article goes on to spread misinformation (don't you just love the media?)
In previous incarnations, players advanced through the game by killing cops, selling pornography to children and killing prostitutes. Details of the latest version have not been released."The mayor does not support any video game where you earn points for injuring or killing police officers," said Jason Post, a spokesman for Mayor Bloomberg.
Selling pornography to minors and killing prostitutes have never been required to advance through any of the GTA games, the former is not even possible due to the fact children never have, and never will be included in the series according to Dan Houser. Earning points for killing police officers is another inaccuracy.
You can read more about this at GamePolitics and Slashdot.
People who don't know anything about anything and try to report on it through misinformed accounts from watchdog websites should be executed.
You guys are wrong, players DO NOT progress through any GTA by killing poilcemen, selling porn to kids, or killing prostitutes. Children don't even appear in any GTA games, and according to Dan Houser, they never will. Killing prostitutes gives little, if any reward to player, and killing police only increases the chance of getting killed. Not progressing. How about you get your facts straight in your shitty newspaper to make it slightly less shitty.
Besides, first amendment, the mayor can't do shit.
I thought this was an April Fools until I looked further into it, thats how silly I think it is. I never saw them pissed off at True Crime 2 when it was in New York, and it was all about corrupt cops and killing good people (unless you wanted to be the good guy, which I doubt many did).
All they're doing is pulling stuff from us. We've been saying we spotted children in the trailer and they're just adding to it. We're actually starting to bring this shit on ourselves, us the fans...not Rockstar.
Well where did they get the Shooting Cops for points bit? There just making this stuff up it's not our fault.
Well they're getting the cop killing thing from San Andreas still...they're morons.
They can't really say this is such a big problem when GTAIII and Liberty City Stories were based around the same place.
Well Rockstar was already ordered to change GTAIII because of the one mission that had you blow up Donald Love's building, they had to change because of 9/11.

Yeah i heard about that, you had to like fly a dodo into the Love media building for Darkel.
They weren't ordered to take that out, they took that out themselves after September 11th, and they have stop by the claim they never exists. I know they exists, as do you, but the fact is the government was never brang into it. Only R* knew about the missions. I could be wrong, but thats what I know.

I was about to bring up the fact that Liberty City has ALWAYS been based on New York, it wasn't a recent thing..... Ninety-five percent of the people playing the games know this, a few landmarks aren't going to suddenly make us realise where it is. Hell, a lot of us wanted the landmarks, because we KNEW WHERE IT WAS BASED ON.

The set of missions were taken out in later versions of the game. Not that long after though, maybe after the first batch. I've seen videos of the mission before, I'll have to try and find it again.

Please do that.

Ya, please do. Would love to see a not modded in Dodo flying in GTA 3.
And correct me if I'm wrong but was the PS1 and Advance versions were based on New York too? Or was that Carcer City or something...

Yeah I think it was either GTA1 or 2 that had Liberty City, Vice City and San Andreas and that's how they came up with the GTA3 trilogy by remaking each city/state in each game.
Anyways, these stupid politicians don't know what they're talking about and just being little Jack Thompsons. They should get their facts straight before accusing R* of anything. Like selling pornography to children? WTF?

Exactly, where does this come from when they say selling kids porn. Seriously, they hate us and the games so much and say and accuse without playing the game, neverless even know what you do in the game. Really, because in the trailer there may be a kid it means we'r gonna sell porn to them. I just don't understand, really. They probably didn't even know we might of saw children in the trailer, they probably were just throwin more things up to try and sue and take GTA down.
They're just bastards that dont have enything else to do they should go and do their own s***t and leave us gamers alone if a kid wants to get a game he's gonna get it anyway so they should stop bitchin'
Liberty City has been used 4 times already, GTAIV makes it the fifth.GTA1, GTA3, GTAAdvance, and GTALCS were the 4 games to already use it.
Where was GTA2 based again? Was that Liberty, or London?
No, London was used for the two expansions; 1969 and the lesser known 1961.
GTA2 takes places in an unknown city (referred to as Anywhere City) in the near future, assumed to be in 2013. However, it's split into the same generic districts as Liberty (Industrial, Commercial and Residential), so it's possible, but it's not meant to be any city in particular.
Hopefully R* doesnt run into trouble so we could get our hands on GTA-4 with no proble.
aww, geez, another lawsuit. take two company grown tired of this sh*t
i guess i'll pray for 'em so something bad wouldn't happen
GTA IV won't be set in NYC it will be set in Liberty City. What a bunch of Jackasses.
well, actually, LC is a PARODY of NYC, legally you could sue a parody if they had crossed the line
in this case, the landmarks of NY has been used in LC explicitly!
this is a crack of bullsh*t, they didn't sue true crime, why the hell they would sue GTA???
yeah, riiight, true crime was a cop stoory, how educating!!!!!!!!(sarcasm)
Safest big city? lol yeah... riiight, looks like those politicians are pretending to care about children's mental health by distorting the facts about GTAs.
"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland,"
It amazes me that they even know about halo.
This is not going to be a big deal though. How would they want to stop it? Highly rasing the pegi stuf or whatever rating your country has.

No, you can't sue for parodies. Parodies are actually protected under the law, I think. Look at Weird Al, that's ALL HE DOES, is parodies. And the landmarks aren't being used explicitly...... What's explicit about them?
I don't think NYC is the safest place in Americ. I think it's the worst place in the USA. I think their jeasous off the game.
NYC has lot of crimes, I think so.
Thanks,

they can't sue because they don't use NYC as their name place. They uesd LC
thanks, gtasmodder
I think its ridiculous that they've already started a war against it, if they had their way they'd ban every one of the GTA games without knowing enough trueful information about it.

Um, they won't play it. They'd rather assume what it's like based on what their sister's neighbor's best friend's daughter had to say about the game when she bought it for her 10 year old. Go figure.

Yeah, they should test out the games before, pulling stuff out there arse, lets rebel.
It just frustrates me when they make assumptions on a mature game (that should only be sold to people 18 and over, by the way) that they haven't even sampled, and they want to get rid of it because it might 'damage' people, psychologically, like it did with Manhunt. Only lunatics go out and re-create a death they saw in a game because it looked good, not everybodys the same
